March9, the day before I (was supposed to) leave Bangladesh, fortunately I could met and had dinner with CEO of KFS, the company running organic tea garden. I think everyone who visits Bangladesh knows this company because of their most famous product, Kazi&Kazi organic tea. (http://www.kazitea.com/index.html)
As I myself belong to Agricultural economy department, I'm really interested in organic farming in Bangladesh. So I'm glad to have met her.
Actually I wrote three pages report about what her told me, but it is too long to post all of it here so I'm gonna explain it briefly.
Its most famous product is K&K, organic tea. It has its own distribution route including tea garden, collecting natural fertilizer system and supermarket to sell its organic products. It is said that this ordinary route makes cost cheaper than usual organic products.
In terms of development economics, the most important part of the route is the way to collect natural fertilizer, cow’s composed. Instead of owning cow, it gives cow to community women and contributes to empower them by buying natural fertilizer and milk from them.
Before giving cow, KSF provides meeting at least 4 times, explain the system specifically to women and make them understand the system. Also it visits all women once a week for buying the milk and composed and consulting their problem about farming.
Now KSF has 1 field worker, 6 branches and works with 2000 women living in rural area.

There are two things that are most impressive
for me.
The first is this system makes rural people recognize the advantage of
agriculture and encourage them to work towards the rural area. It prevents
rapid urbanization that is becoming a big problem in many developing countries
and preserves natural environment and traditional culture villages holding for
a long time.
The second point is by providing not money but job, it encourages
women empowerment more efficiently than conventional micro finance. One problem
of previous micro finance is even if they get money, some of them cannot handle
it or do not know how to invest for sustainable income and just big amount of
loan is left. Instead of it, this system helps women to have their occupation
and indicate the way to earn money sustainably.
She told me much more like the difficulties, advantages and specific systems.
Now I'm thinking about going Bangladesh again to learn this sustainable social business from KSF. I think it can be wide-spread business around developing countries. Someday I wanna put this business in practice....
and I wish I could write much better English...I should make an effort.
